Loris

A railroad town from 1887 that still closes Main Street every October for a chicken bog cook-off.

Loris was founded on 7 December 1887 as a stop on the Wilmington, Chadbourn and Conway Railroad, and incorporated on 26 July 1902. The first brick building went up in 1907 to house the Bank of Loris; the telephone line to Conway opened in 1909; the high school followed in 1920. It is still small — 2,449 residents at the 2020 census, across about 4.57 square miles — and it sits 95 feet above sea level, against roughly 20 feet down in Socastee. It is a real town rather than a subdivision with a name.

The Bog-OffThe Loris Bog-Off takes over downtown on the third weekend of October, built around chicken bog — chicken, rice, sausage and spices. Carnival rides, school performances, a petting zoo and a duck-calling contest come with it.
A town, not a developmentIts own Main Street, a branch of the Horry County Memorial Library, local papers, and schools run by Horry County Schools. The character here predates the beach economy by a century.
Ninety-five feet upElevation is not a small thing on this coast. Loris sits well above the coastal plain towns, which changes the flood conversation entirely.
Inland pricingYou are about forty minutes from the sand rather than four, and the price per square foot reflects it. For buyers who want land, that is the point.
