Socastee

A Myrtle Beach mailing address, Horry County taxes, and a community that was here two hundred years before the resort was.

Socastee is not a town. It is a census-designated place in unincorporated Horry County, which means county services, county taxes and no town council of its own. It is also one of the oldest named places on this coast: it appears as “Sawkastee” in a 1711 land grant to Percival Pawley, and by the 1870s it was a working centre for naval stores — turpentine, tar and pitch. The Socastee Historic District went on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. The modern version has grown fast: 14,295 residents in 2000, 19,952 in 2010, and 22,213 at the 2020 census.

Unincorporated, and that mattersThere is no town council, no town millage and no town police department. Horry County handles roads, zoning and law enforcement, so your tax bill and your service calls both go to the county.
Older than the resortA 1711 land grant, a Revolutionary War skirmish near Socastee Creek in 1781, and a naval-stores economy by the 1870s. The historic district has been on the National Register since 2002.
It has grown by more than half since 2000From 14,295 residents to 22,213 in twenty years, up 11.3% in the 2010s alone. Median age is 41.0 — younger than most of the beach towns.
The mail says Myrtle BeachAddresses here read “Myrtle Beach, SC 29588”, which is why buyers searching the city listings often miss it entirely. Search by ZIP, not by city name.
